However, it may be analyzed in terms of biology—a girl must pass puberty to become a woman—and sociology, as a great deal of mature relating in social contexts is learned rather than instinctive. In this context, gender explicitly excludes reference to biological differences, to focus on cultural differences.

In general, however, feminism refers to examining, and dismantling, power structures around diversity and difference, such as inequality between men and women.

What is the role of sex differences in the functioning and perpetuation of gender inequality? Attempts to explain gender inequality at all levels are haunted by essentialism. Essentialist arguments impute distinctive attributes to women and men and attribute the social differences between women’s and men’s activities, opportunities, statuses, and roles to these distinct attributes. To complicate matters, essentialist arguments proclaiming superior attributes for women exist alongside of the arguments proclaiming women inferior.
Moreover, while for some, essentialism always means a difference based in biology or genetics, for others it includes cultural differences that are embodied in women and men. Analytical Task The general analytical problem. To investigate how essentialist arguments work, we will examine how different kinds of essentialist arguments might be applied to explain some aspect of gender inequality, in contrast to a non-essentialist argument.
We aim to see both the attraction of essentialist arguments and the possibilities for alternatives. Select one form or facet of gender inequality that you will try to explain for this task. This instance or aspect of gender inequality should be sufficiently important, widespread, and enduring or recurring to merit thoughtful theory and explanation. It should also be narrow or specific enough that the goal of explaining it is plausible. For example, the facet might be that wives commonly defer to husbands.
For the selected type or aspect of gender inequality, you will suggest five alternative explanations, each one representing a different approach to explaining such social phenomena. The explanations should be succinct but clear.

Although complete gender equality continues to elude the modern world, the substantial gains over time are significant. During the Romantic Era, which began in Europe during the 18th century, the position of women was subordinate to that of men.
This non binding programme-of-action asserted that governments have a responsibility to meet individuals’ reproductive needs, rather than demographic targets. As such, it called for family planning , reproductive rights services, and strategies to promote gender equality and stop violence against women. The Maputo Protocol guarantees comprehensive rights to women, including the right to take part in the political process, to social and political equality with men, to control their reproductive health , and an end to female genital mutilation.
It was adopted by the African Union in the form of a protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and came into force in In domestic situations, the role of Parenting or child rearing is more commonly shared or not as widely considered to be an exclusively female role, so that women may be free to pursue a career after childbirth. Another manifestation of the change in social attitudes is the non-automatic taking by a woman of her husband’s surname on marriage.
The Sexual Flexibility among Greco-Roman Males Homer’s recounting of the bloody Trojan War in the Iliad and Odyssey illustrates the real life “military culture based on permanent warfare in which masculinity was highly valued. Plutarch tells us the reason for such an arrangement: For when the going gets tough, tribesmen don’t give much thought for their fellow tribesmen, nor clansmen for their fellow clansmen.
But gender equality isn’t considered to be one of these factors, since even in relatively gender-equal societies, the gap between men and women’s preferences is only reduced, not eliminated.

Share via Email Pew study: Alamy Online dating isn’t the future of romance, it’s the present. It seems to be working: While many folks still hold a low opinion of internet daters, the cultural tides are turning, and romances kindled online are increasingly mainstream. There are, of course, downsides to meeting people online, just as there are to meeting people in any other venue. But for better or worse, internet dating is revolutionizing how we find partners — and it’s making the dating process an increasingly gender-equal and progressive one.
All we want is equality. Despite this progress, federal law does not expressly prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in fields like employment, housing, and access to services, and fewer than half of the states offer explicit protections for LGBT people at the state level. Without these protections, LGBT people across the United States lack clear recourse and redress when they are fired, evicted, or refused service because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
Against this backdrop of legal vulnerability, lawmakers who oppose marriage for same-sex couples and recent moves to advance transgender equality have led an anti-LGBT charge, pushing for, and often succeeding in getting, new laws that carve out religious exemptions for individuals who claim that compliance with particular laws interferes with their religious or moral beliefs. While LGBT equality is not the only area where exemptions have been debated—particularly as lawmakers have sought to substantially broaden exemptions related to sexual and reproductive healthcare—this report specifically examines a worrying wave of exemptions being introduced to blunt the recognition of LGBT rights across the United States.
Expand Share The freedom of religion, as well as nondiscrimination, is a significant rights issue, and it is important that governments do not unnecessarily burden the exercise of religious conscience. This is especially important to minority religious groups, whose practices are all too easily trampled on by laws and policies enacted by majorities.
But when exemptions to laws to accommodate religious beliefs or practices impinge on the rights of others or core societal values like nondiscrimination, lawmakers should proceed with caution. Proponents of these laws argue that they properly balance religious freedom with the rights of LGBT individuals. In fact, with few exceptions, the laws as drafted create blanket exemptions for religious believers to discriminate with no consideration of or even mechanism for consideration of the harms and burdens on others.
Because of their narrow focus on the objector, the laws provide little protection for the rights, well-being, or dignity of those who are turned away. Statements made by legislative supporters of the laws, and in some cases the content of the laws themselves, moreover, make clear that they aim to push back against recent gains toward LGBT equality and to dilute the rights of LGBT people to secure protection from invidious discrimination. They send a signal that the state governments enacting them accept and even embrace the dangerous and harmful notion that discrimination against LGBT people is a legitimate demand of both conscience and religion.
